The Creative Process

Woodcuts

The Wood-cut process worldwide have not lost its popularity. Many Printmaker as well as painters, continue to indulge with this medium. It is not as popular as it was during the past ( the 40's and 50's). The stark contrast of simple black and white cannot be matched. When the process of color wood-cut comes into play, then it becomes more technical, a considerable amount of cutting and cutting is very tedious.

My association with wood-cuts started right here in Nassau. I did not have the right tools or professional help. I abandoned it until I went to the Arts Student League, which was in 1969, under the tutorship of Mr. Roberto Delamonica and Mr. Song Moy, who helped me considerably.

These new wood-cuts that are in color, have been in the background of my mind for the past twenty years. I got the courage to start working on a few small blocks in color, certainly my intension is to take this process much further.

The Process

The wood-cut "Autie Rosie" took almost six weeks, just cutting the block, then came the printing process, where rubbing and cutting the block was most tedious.

The printmaker must have a love or attachment to really indulge in this process The-Wood-cut.
